NotifyMail is a system extension (or application) that listens for a finger connection. When
it receives the connection (for the appropriate user), it will notify you of new email. This can be done by using any combination of the following:
- telling your email package to check your mail
- displaying a dialog box
- playing a sound
- displaying a floating mailbox window
- running any file, including AppleScript scripts.
- various other tasks
Please read the file Installation Instructions BEFORE installing NotifyMail.

TSM Fix:
This is NOT needed if you are running MacOS 8 or later. The TSM Fix that is included with NotifyMail should be installed, if the NotifyMail window is turned on. Due to a bug in the operating system, sometimes clicking in the window doesn't do anything (or may crash your machine if you click repeatedly). This extension by Matt Slot fixes the problem. Check out the README in the TSM Fix folder for more information.
appe<->APPL:
This has been provided for your convenience to easily change NotifyMail's file type from 'appe' to 'APPL' so that you can double click it if you are using a SLIP/PPP connection. Just drop NotifyMail onto it and the file type will change from 'appe' to 'APPL' or vice versa. You may have to rebuild your desktop file after doing this.
DragStrip™ Addition:
This addition is for use with Poppybank's DragStrip. See the Installation Instructions for more information.
+ Reworked support for PPP...now includes support for MacPPP, FreePPP, OT/PPP, and MacSLIP. However,
we still don't recommend using NotifyMail with a PPP/SLIP connection.
+ If a minor error occurs, such as can't check mail at startup, the message disappears after 30 seconds (this is for non-fatal erors).
+ Mailbox window now defaults to being placed in the lower left corner of the main screen. If multiple monitors are rearranged, the window may become hidden. Removing the prferences will reposition the window.
+ Added flash to toggle only when email package is not running.
+ Added support for Outlook Express
Changes from 3.0.7a
+ If an error occurred at startup, it now times out the error message after a few minutes
+ If you hit Option-Escape to stop the flashing scroll lock light AND the mailbox window was showing,
NotifyMail would crash. This has been fixed.
+ Recompiled with CodeWarrior Pro 1
+ Fixed bug if UDP was being used on port 79, the user would not be notified of new mail
+ UDP is now an option set from Configure NotifyMail (ResEdit change still works)
+ If it was set for UDP, quitting would trigger a "new mail" message
+ If a user changes some of the network settings, a box tells the user that he/she must restart
+ If there is a problem during startup, NotifyMail doesn't hang and exits with an error message.
Changes from 3.0.7
+ Fixed background launching of files
+ Fixed OT/PPP & MacSLIP support so that the new IP address is properly determined before uploading the file when the network connection is re-established (it was ONLY using the IP address determined at startup). Also fixed some potential crashing on this such that Open Transport isn't repeatedly initialized and terminated (OT doesn't mean TCP/IP).
+ 3.0.6 had the wrong ANSI C library linked in the 68K code, so strange things were happening; this has been fixed.
Changes from 3.0.6
+Recompiled with latest version of CodeWarrior
+AppleScript ResetCount no longer launches the file
+DragStrip addition updated to call NRSL which WILL launch
the file (the addition uses AppleEvents to communicate
with NotifyMail)
+Added option to auto show/hide mailbox window. It is hidden if there
are 0 messages; when a message comes in, the mailbox window appears
+Properly handles (hopefully) files to launch (and dynamic IP addressing
file) that don't reside on the boot volume
+DragStrip Addition now shows count when small icon is shown
+Mail sound is disabled in Configure NotifyMail if Play Sound is not selected anywhere
+If there is an error at startup, dialog goes away after 2 minutes
+Added option to blink scroll lock light on extended keyboards if there
is new mail. Control-Esc will reset the count to zero and stop
the keyboard light from blinking (this actually works even if
the keyboard light option is not checked).
+ Added support for QuickMail Pro/Express
+ Added support for Cyberdog 2.0
+ Added support for Open Transport PPP
+ Added support for LetterRip
Changes from 3.0.5
+No longer hangs at startup if Open Transport and/or TCP/IP is not loaded
+Recompiled with latest Open Transport libraries
Changes from 3.0.4
+Added ability to choose sound to play when new mail arrives
(Uses system sounds and built in New Mail Sound)
Changes from 3.0.3
+Recompiled with CodeWarrior 9
